Sometimes when children are trafficked, their trafficker may keep them in their regular routine of attending school and going home at night. In other situations, these kids completely miss out on receiving an education altogether. Either way, their education suffers due to missing out, mental health, and other struggles that come with healing from their trauma.

“Rachel” was trafficked here in the U.S. when she was 14 years old by a man that she believed to be her boyfriend. Under the impression that he loved her, she was excited when he suggested that they plan a vacation together.

When they arrived in a nearby state, the “boyfriend” immediately turned on her. He demanded that she work the streets in order to pay for her portion of the vacation. 

Luckily, an undercover police officer identified Rachel and helped her out of her situation. She was traumatized from being trafficked and faced many challenges, including her mental health, dealing with her dysfunctional family, and financial issues.⁠

Currently (January 2020), O.U.R. Aftercare is providing support and consultation to Rachel’s team who is helping her improve her mental health and helping her recover from addiction. We are grateful to support strong survivors like Rachel.

what happens when a survivor isn’t rescued until they are an adult?

Another survivor, Amanda (name changed), was rescued from trafficking when she was already past the normal high school age. The only way for her to complete a GED would be to have someone tutor her and help her through GED classes and tests since she had little to no education during the years she was trafficked. 

A GED can change the course of a survivor’s life forever, and help boost their confidence in themselves as they work to heal from their trauma. With your help, we can help cover the cost of a GED program and tutor for survivors like Rachel and Amanda to support them in reaching their dreams.
